Umi Sushi & Tapas, Connecticut's first kaiten-style Japanese restaurant, opens Tuesday in Blue Back Square.
With this concept, the sushi literally comes to you, delivered by way of a high-tech conveyor belt. The sushi chefs make fresh rolls and nigiri and place the plates on the belt. As the plates travel toward you, simply choose what you want. At the end of the meal, a waiter will calculate the check based on the number of plates you've taken.
Umi's website has sample menus. There's also a wide variety of beverages - sake cocktails, scorpion bowls, martinis, draft and bottled beers and 10 different flavors of bubble tea.
Umi Sushi & Tapas is located at 53 Isham Road in West Hartford. The restaurant is open Monday through Sunday, 11:15 a.m. to 10 p.m. 860-206-0290, umisushitapas.com

looks gross. West Hartford is so snooty nowadays.
I've eaten at places like this and it's a lot of fun. Noella doesn't know what she's talking about - must not visit WH often! BBS may be upscale, but there are plenty of dives that she'd feel comfortable in. Nothing wrong with a restaurant that is clean and serves fresh food.
Looks awesome! These type of resteraunts are very popular in other parts of the country - glad West Hartford is offering something other than another Italian resteraunt.
they've been around for years........connecticut can be so white bread........
